Do You Need a Base Coat or Top Coat with HOMEI Weekly Gel?

Short answer: no. For a standard HOMEI Weekly Gel manicure, you do not need a separate base coat or top coat. Weekly Gel combines base, colour and top functions in one bottle, which is one reason it is simpler for beginners than a conventional multi-step gel system.

Optional base and top products still have useful roles, but they are not automatic requirements. Each one changes the manicure in a different way, so the right choice depends on whether you want easier removal, longer wear or a fuller glossy finish.

The standard HOMEI Weekly Gel routine

For the simplest application, you need clean, completely dry nails, one HOMEI Weekly Gel colour and a compatible HOMEI LED lamp.

  1. Wash and dry your hands and nails thoroughly.
  2. Remove surface oil with a suitable nail cleanser if needed, then avoid touching the prepared nail.
  3. Apply a thin coat of Weekly Gel, keeping uncured product away from the skin and cuticle.
  4. Cure using the time specified for your HOMEI gel and lamp.
  5. Apply and cure another thin coat if you want more colour coverage.

When would you add a base product?

HOMEI offers two optional bases with opposite priorities. Choose according to the result you want rather than adding a base by default.

Peel-Off Serum Base: for easier colour changes

HOMEI Peel-Off Serum Base is designed for people who find Weekly Gel difficult to peel, wear nail colour mainly for weekends or change shades frequently.

  • Apply two thin, even coats to the natural nail.
  • Allow each coat to dry naturally in air.
  • Do not cure the Serum Base under the lamp.
  • Once dry, apply and cure Weekly Gel as usual.

This base prioritises easier removal. Wear time varies, so it is not the best option when your main goal is maximum adhesion.

Long Keep Base Gel: for stronger adhesion

HOMEI Long Keep Base Gel is for customers who want to extend the wear of their Weekly Gel manicure.

  • Clean and remove oil from the nails first.
  • Apply one thin coat of Long Keep Base Gel.
  • Cure it with a compatible LED lamp.
  • Apply Weekly Gel over the cured base.

The important trade-off is removal: Long Keep Base Gel changes the normal peel-off experience. HOMEI instructs users to remove it with acetone-containing nail polish remover rather than expecting the manicure to peel away in the standard way.

When would you add a top gel?

HOMEI Special Top Gel is optional. It is intended for extra gloss, a fuller gel appearance and sealing nail art, stickers or small decorative elements.

Apply it only after the Weekly Gel colour has been applied and cured, then cure the top gel according to its instructions. HOMEI Japan notes that Special Top Gel is not peelable by itself; it is designed to be used over Weekly Gel.

If you want both stronger wear and extra gloss, Long Keep Base Gel, Weekly Gel and Special Top Gel can form a more complete system, but you must follow the Long Keep Base removal instructions. Do not expect a standard peel-off removal after using it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Adding a random base coat: products from another system may change curing, adhesion or removal behaviour.
  • Curing Peel-Off Serum Base: it is a traditional air-dry base and should not be cured under the lamp.
  • Expecting Long Keep Base Gel to peel normally: it requires the removal method stated on its product page.
  • Applying thick layers: build colour with thin, separately cured coats instead.
